The long term moral aspirations of marx, of professor ginsberg, of hobhouse, and one might add, of adam smith, all fall within approximately the same range; a social science making possible the rational control of the environment is a moral demand central to them all; all too share the emphasis on individual responsibility and development, the "leap from the realm of necessity to the realm of freedom", which is designated by professor ginsberg in the idea of "self-direction". What mr. lowenthal is anxious to prove is that not merely considerations of defence against russian aggression require the preservation of the alliance between britain and the united states, but that in being opposed to soviet communism the labour party must be committed to a close association with american capitalism.

Appeasement
, hitler now brought off his biggest coup: at munich came the crowning betrayal of czechoslovakia — a triumph for the all-out appeasers: "the french and british governments went so far in appeasement that when the soviet government offered to stand by czechoslovakia if the latter resisted hitler, even though she were let down by her ally france and by great britain, the czechs were told by mr. chamberlain and m. georges bonnet, the french foreign secretary, that if they fought with the soviet union as their ally, france and britain might not remain neutral and might supply hitler with arms and munitions (i.e. become the arsenal of fascism). when the foreign affairs committee of the french chamber in february 1933 passed a unanimous resolution calling for an international embargo on arms to japan, sir john responded on 27th february with a speech in the commons in which he again formally repudiated the covenant of the league (which bound all signatories to come to the help of victims of aggression), declared that the british government would not in any circumstances take action against japan, and proclaimed an immediate embargo on the export of arms both to china, the victim of aggression, and to japan the aggressor— an early example of the illegal as well as totally immoral device of "non-intervention" that was to cripple the spanish republican government a few years later.

Its strengths were profound: the extraordinary power and liberating effect of people in movement; the re-emergence of the working class as a mass protagonist; the articulation of a new set of demands; the coming into play of new areas of conflict; the constitution of new social antagonisms; the emergence into struggle of new social subjects. Much of the revolt of 1968, drawing on the movements of the early 60s, took a cultural form: it was expressed in music, in a new preoccupation with lifestyle ('the personal is political'), in libertarian and antiauthoritarian themes, in a stress on pleasure, in the spectacle of consumerism, at its extreme in the fusion of politics and culture in the underground and hippy philosophy.

Spend, Spend, Spend?
Why should these countries insist on spending less than they earn - thereby generating huge trade surpluses, which is the form in which the deflationary pressures of their excess-saving decisions are transmitted to the rest of the world - when, with an increase in expenditure, all of their citizens could be made better off, as a result of the increased imports which their trade surpluses and huge foreign exchange reserves allow them to purchase? certainly, the failure of west germany and japan to enjoy to the full the benefits of their new-found economic prosperity is unhelpful from the point of view of sustaining international levels of effective demand. That is to say: their savings, in the form of the huge financial surpluses which have, hitherto, been going to finance the us budget and trade deficits, must be recycled to other participants in the world economy, thereby providing them with the 'the spectacle of the richest nation on earth receiving a massive injection of resources from the rest of the world' purchasing power to increase domestic spending and finance any resultant trade deficits via rapid increases in indebtedness (both internal and external).

SUPERGIRL
supergirl is a good example of a film which while appearing to accept a change in the status quo (by having a woman in the role of a traditionally male hero) in fact reinforces the status quo and reassures its audience that any apparent challenge to the status quo is probably illusory and anyway containable. When supergirl arrives on earth she is full of wonderment at what she finds from daisies to bunnies, to bras- by making supergirl an adolescent girl who is sexually naive, much of the threat of a strong woman is taken away - it is worth noting that tomboy characters are conventionally shown as being sexually naive.

If you go round a big toyshop it is easy to see how the world of toys really follows a whole set of unconscious rules, rules which are later reflected in another form, in the minds and attitudes of the children who receive the toys.
